In some applications, it may become apparent that the O-ring itself will need help when dealing with higher temperatures and pressures. The Back-up ring works with the O-ring to help it keep its shape and remain rigid. The O-ring will have been installed as a softer, more flexible barrier to prevent leakage. However, these properties will leave it somewhat vulnerable to being pinched or torn within the groove. One solution would be to use a Back-up ring to provide reinforcement with a stiffer material (They are generally fitted where the system pressure exceeds 1500 PSI). We offer Back-up rings in three main types, these being Spiral, Split and Solid. Back-up rings are commonly offered in either PTFE or Nitrile 90 shore materials, each providing their own unique protection to the O-ring.
